McCain says his confusing questions resulted from tiredness

Former FBI Director James Comey offered dramatic testimony Thursday before the U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee, peppering his remarks with memorable exclamations ("Lordy!") and even an allusion to the 12 century murder of Archbishop of Canterbury Thomas Becket.

Comey refused to say whether Trump's alleged subtle threatening of Comey's job, outlined in his prepared opening statement, and the president's request that the FBI drop its investigation of former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn constituted obstruction of justice.

"You heard Senator Risch ask about the expression of hope", Cornyn said.

The questions prompted Comey to clarify that Clinton was not linked to the Russians in the same way that Trump was allegedly being investigated.

"It's my judgment that I was sacked because of the Russian Federation investigation", he said.

After that exchange, McCain took his last few minutes to address part of Comey's testimony and "that thing" that Trump asked him.

Senator McCain puzzled many during his questioning of Comey, repeatedly asking the former FBI head how the bureau could have completed its investigation into Hillary Clinton last July when the investigation into the Donald Trump campaign remains ongoing.

Probably the only other consideration that I guess I can talk about in an open setting is, at one point, the attorney general had directed me not to call it an investigation, but instead to call it a matter, which confused me and concerned me.

"I took it as a direction", Comey told the committee.

Tables were turned on Democrats just weeks before the U.S. election, however, when Comey, again acting on his own, briefly reopened the probe - a decision Clinton believes cost her the vote. But Lynch's interference at the end of an investigation that had already reached a conclusion is not the same thing as Trump's attempt to kill an investigation that was just beginning.

Comey added that a meeting between former President Bill Clinton and then-Attorney General Loretta Lynch forced him to hold a press conference to discuss the FBI's investigation into the former secretary of state. At the same time, he faulted Clinton for being "extremely careless" in the use of her private email and server. Mr. Comey didn't disappoint. Turning more serious, McCain said, "while I missed an opportunity in today's hearing, I still believe this question is important, and I intend to submit it in writing to Mr. Comey for the record". Viewers saw John McCain confused and befuddled as he put forward his questions to Comey.
