Trump hails fallen, their families at Arlington

President Trump gives Memorial Day Address at Arlington National Cemetery

Trump honored Gold Star families calling their fallen loved ones "angels sent to us by God", in his first public address since returning from his first trip overseas as commander-in-chief.

He then delivered a 20-minute address extolling not only those who died in battle, but also the Gold Star families they left behind. The German-U.S. relationship has been a bedrock of post-World War II foreign policy, and Merkel is still "a deeply convinced trans-Atlanticist", her spokesman, Steffen Seibert, said Monday.

TRUMP: Brave Americans in every generation have answered the call of duty and won victory for freedom in its hour of need.

"In a world awash in change some things stand firm, some things are as Plato said, good and true and attractive", Mattis said, "The kid on the line who never had a chance to grow old will always be there to teach us that suffering has meaning if it is accepted out of love for others".

Trump went on to honor Homeland Security Secretary Gen. John Kelly's fallen son, Robert, and the Kelly family. "It is because of families like yours that all of our families can live in safety and in peace".

The president gave his first Memorial Day address, after laying the wreath, like so many presidents before him, as part of the ceremony to remember, and honor, the men and women who died fighting for the United States of America.

Earlier, Trump placed a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns.

Trump spoke for the first time since returning to the United States on Saturday from his nine-day trip overseas.

"They each had their own names, their own stories, their own attractive dreams", said Trump in his address.

He paid special tribute to two soldiers who died in Afghanistan, Army Capt. Andrew D. Byers of Colorado Springs and Christopher D. Horton of the Oklahoma National Guard. "We will always be there".

It was a proud Memorial Day scene for every American who understands and appreciates the exceptionalism of his native or adopted land.

At the time, he did so alongside Vice President Mike Pence.

In the speech, Trump paid tribute to Army Spc. Afterward, he visited a section of the cemetery where military members killed in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are buried.

As the anthem played, Trump swayed back and forth while patting his chest before beginning to sing along to portions of the song with a bit more enthusiasm than some consider appropriate for the occasion.
