Thiem stuns Djokovic, sets date with Nadal in French Open semis

Simona Halep – 2017 Roland Garros Jimmie48 Tennis

Austrian sixth seed Thiem sent the world number two crashing to his earliest loss in Paris in seven years with a memorable 7-6 (7-5), 6-3, 6-0 triumph.

Thiem showed why he is one of the most exciting young talents in the game, blasting 38 winners in a stunning 7-6 (7/5) 6-3 6-0 victory.

RAFAEL Nadal's relentless push for a 10th French Open crown continues at lightning speed after the Spaniard reached a record 10th Roland Garros semi-final as Pablo Carreno Busta succumbed to injury.

Murray and Wawrinka booked their meeting after the Brit overcame a defensive start to defeated No. 8 seed Kei Nishikori 2-6, 6-1, 7-6 (0), 6-1, and the No. 3 Wawrinka rolled past No. 7 Marin Cilic 6-3, 6-3, 6-1. Just a pretty bad set.

"Obviously I love this sport".

"Trust me, I'm thinking about many things", he said.

The last British player to win the men's singles French Open title was Fred Perry in 1935.

"It's a fact that I'm not playing close to my best, and I know that". "It's a big challenge, but I'm up for it".

Thiem is the only player to have beaten Nadal on clay this season, but the 23-year-old is under no illusion about the size of the task that awaits him in Friday's semi.

This will be Nadal's 10th trip to the French Open semifinals.

In a match dubbed "the final before the final", Romanian Simona Halep plays Ukraine's Elina Svitolina.

Djokovic came to the court early to hit a little more before his match, and, while his new coach Andre Agassi was not present, the Serbian tennis star looked calm, composed and confident as he walked onto the court to face Thiem. "I will get through it, learn the lessons and figure out how to get out of it".

The 31-year-old has dropped just 22 games through five matches, bettering his previous low of 25 en route the last four in Paris in 2008. "Forehand, backhand, serve. These weapons are quite good", said Nadal of his upcoming opponent.

The second-seeded Djokovic had two set points in the opener but couldn't convert either.

Murray is in the semifinals in Paris for the fourth year in a row.

Pliskova reached the U.S. Open final a year ago, but the Czech player had never been past the second round at Roland Garros in five previous appearances.

Meanwhile there were no such problems for world No.1 Andy Murray and nine-times champion Rafael Nadal, who both advanced to the semi-finals.
