Canadian Grand Prix: Mclaren Express 'Serious Concerns' Over 'Lost' Honda

Fernando Alonso is likely to leave McLaren this autumn after suggesting that the team need to be winning grands prix by September to have any hope of persuading him to extend his contract.

"What we all want is to win, and I think relating to the answer before, Zak's comments about Honda, is probably what you expect Zak to say".

"If we are winning before the end of September I will make a decision and stay".

The team's struggle for points so far this season - let alone wins - means a victory in the next three months is extremely unlikely.

But his career moves saw him go from a triumphant Renault to a bleak and unhappy season at McLaren-Mercedes in 2007 and then back to Renault before he moved to Ferrari and McLaren-Honda without success.

Alonso's contract expires after this year, and his vehicle has only finished one of the six races in 2017 after finishing a way-below-his-ability 10th for the 2016 season. "Our preference is to win the world championship with Honda", Reuters quoted Brown as saying.

McLaren boss Zak Brown revealed yesterday that McLaren is fast approaching "a fork in the road", when hard decisions will have to be made.

McLaren's renewed partnership with Honda in 2015 was billed as a return to the glory days of their collaboration in the late 1980s and early 1990s, when Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna dominated. It's the same with me. He wants to win, he wants to put McLaren again in a contender position for the championship. After three years we are not in that position, so things have to change, for the team.

"Until I sit down with myself in September, I can not say for sure", Alonso said. Until I sit down with myself in September, October or whenever, after the summer, I can not say anything 100 percent now.

"I've always enjoyed the Canadian Grand Prix", added Alonso. "The circuit is unique in that it's very demanding on both the auto and driver".

When Fernando Alonso made a decision to compete in the 101st Indianapolis 500, the two-time Formula 1 World Champion from Spain knew it would be a great adventure.

"The third world championship is my biggest priority".

"But I know that I can jump into any vehicle, any race, with any tyres, with rules and be competitive".

"I'm not afraid of the future, if I can not succeed here and win the third world championship I still love motor racing and I will race in any series".

"The Indy 500 was an incredible experience and it's been wonderful to learn a completely different style of driving, on a different circuit layout and with a very different auto, but I'm ready to get back to my "day job" and go racing in F1 again".
