Iran says terrorist groups attacked Tehran, third assault prevented

An official at Khomeini's mausoleum in south Tehran said "three or four" people had entered via the western entrance and opened fire, killing the gardener and wounding several people, according to Fars.

"Fighters from the Islamic State attacked the Khomeini mausoleum and the parliament building in Tehran", the agency said, citing a "security source".

The rare attacks in the usually safe capital come as Iranian security forces and allied militias are leading offensives against the Sunni jihadists of Islamic State and other militant groups in both Syria and Iraq. The militants are at war with Iranian-backed forces in Syria and Iraq, and view Shiites as apostates.

State media reported that gunmen stormed the parliament building in Tehran and went on a shooting spree.

The latest reports indicate that all terrorists who took part in the siege of the parliament building have been killed.

At least one male assailant escaped the building but was captured as he was on the run, the agency reported.

State TV reported four attackers were involved in the three-hour parliament attack and they were all killed.

- Meanwhile, Tehran municipality tweets about a hike in public transportation fare while Iran security forces are containing terror attacks.

Attacks are highly rare in Tehran and other major cities though two Sunni militant groups, Jaish al-Adl and Jundallah, have been waging a deadly insurgency, mostly in more remote areas, for nearly a decade.

Islamic State used its Amaq news agency to claim responsibility for the attacks.

Attacks of this nature are extremely rare in Iran, particularly in the highly-controlled capital where tourist and government sites are tightly policed. It said a security guard was killed and that one of the attackers was killed by security guards. One of the assailants later blew himself up inside, according to a statement issued by Iran's state news agency, IRNA.

Two attackers - at least one female - blew themselves up outside the shrine, according to local media. However, it is not clear if the attacker who opened fire at the tomb has been apprehended.

One of the attackers was shot dead and one detonated a suicide vest, Tasnim news agency quoted Mohammad Hossein Zolfaghari as saying.

State broadcaster IRIB reported later on Wednesday that the shooting incident at the Iranian parliament was over and all four assailants were dead.

"This morning two terrorist groups attacked the parliament and Imam Khomeini's shrine".

The last major attack in Iran was in 2010 when a Sunni extremist group carried out a suicide attack against a mosque in Sistan-Baluchistan killing 39 people.

Bombers have targeted Iran's parliament and the shrine of the country's revolutionary founder Ruhollah Khomeini.
