Trump will not block ex-FBI director's testimony

Trump Won't Block James Comey's Testimony Before Congress

President Donald Trump will not try to block fired FBI Director James Comey from testifying before Congress, opting not to invoke executive privilege, spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Monday at the White House briefing.

"The president's power to assert executive privilege is well-established", the White House said in a statement, adding that Comey's testimony would "facilitate a swift and thorough examination of the facts".

The president won't invoke executive privilege in an effort to keep Comey from discussing the Russian Federation investigation before the Senate Committee on Intelligence, Trump spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said at the daily briefing Monday.

The significance of the move lies in the fact that Comey was probing alleged Russian hacking in last year's USA presidential election.

Those struggles are coming to a head as fired FBI Director James Comey is set to testify on Capitol Hill Thursday.

Some legal analysts had questioned whether Trump could have blocked Comey's testimony via executive privilege in any event.

Comey's highly anticipated testimony will be the first time he has made public comments since being terminated as director last month.

Burr, a North Carolina Republican who last spoke to Comey on Saturday, said Comey will be free to discuss his interactions with President Donald Trump and the investigation into Russian election interference, and that he was cleared to do so by special counsel Robert Mueller III.

Comey is said to have written detailed notes about three conversations he had with Trump while still Federal Bureau of Investigation director. Just days after Trump's inauguration, he invited the director to dinner and, according to people familiar with Comey's account, asked him repeatedly for his loyalty, which Comey declined to give.

Trump asked Comey to drop the Flynn investigation, said a person who was given a copy of a memo Comey wrote about the conversation.

"I think you'll see her take a larger role in the month of June", said Short, "to draw attention to this dilemma". Separately, a group of supporters rallied near the White House to support the president's decision to withdraw from the Paris climate accord.
