'Wonder Woman' conquers the domestic Box Office with heroic $100.5 million

Given how well Wonder Woman has fared amongst critics and in the box office, something tells us no matter where Diana travels to next, her adventures will be well-received. So far, it's reportedly hauled in a whopping $100 million in USA ticket sales alone, and another $122 million internationally, making it the most successful and biggest-ever film release with a woman in the director's chair.

As Cinemablend points out, Wonder Woman's opening night sum is the biggest domestic box office of any film directed by a female. Gadot made her debut in the role during last year's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which also gave Wonder Woman a new theme for the modern era.

It seems that "Wonder Woman" has been at the center of controversy for weeks, even though the superhero movie only hit theaters this weekend.

The film opens as World War I pilot Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) and his plane crash on Themyscira, the island of the Amazons, where the Princess Diana (Gadot) has been trained by her aunt, the great warrior Antiope (Robin Wright).

China powered the worldwide sales with $38 million, the fourth largest opening of all time for a Warner Bros. film. Warner Bros said 52 percent of the audience was female and 48 percent male. Patty Jenkins has taken the crown from Sam Taylor-Johnson, who previously held the record thanks to Fifty Shades of Grey's $85.1 million.

During an interview with CBS, Patty Jenkins talked about making Wonder Woman, as well as what makes the character and this particular movie different from the others in the genre.

Wonder Woman is available across the United Kingdom in cinemas now.

"I think, nowadays, sadly, money trumps patriotism".

The only other major release this weekend was Fox's "Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie" which will take in $23.5 million from 3,434. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.
