Sacramento-area girl reaches sixth round of National Spelling Bee

Six Minnesota youngsters are competing Wednesday morning on live television in the 90th Scripps National Spelling Bee in suburban Washington, D.C.

Faith Baca of Aurora, an eighth-grader at the Rocky Mountain School of Expeditionary Learning, successfully spelled "sempiternal", which means eternal and unchanging.

Among this year's contestants was -year-old Edith Fuller of Tulsa, Oklahoma, the bee's youngest-ever contestant.

At the end of the third round in the preliminary competition, 188 out of 291 spellers had spelled both of their words correctly on stage. She is among 72 spellers to make the finals at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center.

"I think that's his (Martius') favorite part", Ryndon said jokingly.

Sheridan Hennessey, a fifth grader at Hyde Park School, made it past round three of the preliminaries but fell short on the preliminary test. In round seven, he landed a spot on prime-time television after correctly spelling the word "fougere", a type of fragrance.

"She's doing O.K.so far", he said. The third round of competition will start in the afternoon, and the finals are scheduled to take place Thursday.

For the first round, the students had an idea of the word they would be getting.

Iyer, 14, and 14 other finalists will be on stage in the ESPN national telecast, starting at 7:30 p.m. While a top 50 was expected, only 40 spellers scored higher than 29 points on the written test to advance.

After making the finals of the Scripps National Spelling Bee on Wednesday, local competitor Melodie Loya said, "It's a little nerve-wracking but you get used to it". For more information on eligibility, visit the website.

The victor receives a $40,000 grand prize and plenty of bragging rights, while second place gets a $30,000 reward.
