Train stabbing survivor: 'I'm just trying to heal'

The man accused of stabbing multiple people on a Portland MAX train has been arraigned.

Dozens of anti-fascist protesters could he heard yelling from outside the courtroom as Christian finished his statement. You've got no safe place.

If found guilty of the murder charges, Christian could face either life imprisonment or the death penalty.

Defense attorney Gregory Scholls did not return a call for comment after the hearing. One of the women was wearing a Muslim head covering and both were black.

Just as Jeremy Christian concluded his brief appearance, yelling and screaming could be heard from the hallway as supporters of the victims confronted a supporter of the defendant. Micah Fletcher told KGW-TV that he's focusing on trying to get better.

Fletcher said he had just left class at Portland State University and was on his way to work when he witnessed the incident on the train.

In the patrol auto, Christian can be heard on surveillance video saying he stabbed three people in the neck and that he can "die a happy man", according to court papers.

Before Namkai-Meche was carried away on a stretcher, an eyewitness told the Oregonian, he had a last message: "Tell everyone on this train I love them". That's what I'm doing.

"She further stated, "'Me and my friend were going to get off the MAX and then we turned around while they were fighting and he just started stabbing people.

Christian, who is from OR, had been hurling racial slurs at two teenage girls - one of whom was Muslim - just before allegedly killing his victims, Ricky John Best, 53, of Happy Valley, and Taliesin Myrddin Namkai-Meche, 23, of Portland.

While Fletcher was recovering in the hospital, he told the investigators that Christian yelled racial and religious epithets on the train and threatened to decapitate people, according to the police affidavit of probable cause.

Two Native American men in Washington were also reportedly targeted on Saturday.

He made repeated outbursts in court. Christian-like many of his ilk-has constructed an insane line of reasoning in his brain that makes him believe that an uneducated, homeless felon drinking Kool-Aid and tequila on public transportation is a superior human being simply because he is white.

Christian is charged with two counts of aggravated murder, two counts of second-degree intimidation and one count of attempted aggravated murder, one count of first-degree assault and three counts of unlawful use of a weapon, reports CBS affiliate KOIN. "Get out if you don't like free speech!"

Video showed Christian swinging his arm and - in one motion - opening the knife and stabbing Fletcher in the neck.

Christian's other views include misogyny and transphobia. Just before the arraignment started, the surviving victim, Micah Fletcher, was escorted into the courtroom surrounded by his family.

One of the teens is black.

Despite the state passing groundbreaking laws to track hate crimes in the wake of the murder, racist groups have continued to thrive.

He told jailers he has no permanent address.

Tomica Clark told The Oregonian/OregonLive that she has known Christian since elementary school. "Honestly, that's what he probably would've wanted", the son said. Please condemn any acts of violence, which result directly from hate speech & hate groups.

Trump condemned the fatal stabbings on Monday, calling them "unacceptable".

The lone man to survive Friday's stabbings says he's having a hard time processing what happened.

Mr. Fletcher was at local hospital, where he was being treated for serious injuries, according to authorities.
