Merkel Comments On Europe's Future Put Spotlight On Trump Relations

"We need to know that we have to fight for our own future and destiny as Europeans", Merkel said.

Speaking at a campaign event held in a Bavarian beer tent, Merkel suggested that the Group of Seven (G-7) summit in Italy that ended Saturday had served as something of a wakeup call.

US President Donald Trump arrives for a family photo with leaders of the G7 and leaders of some African countries that have been invited for the two-day talks, on the second day of the G7 summit of Heads of State and of Government, on May 27, 2017 in Taormina, Sicily. "I've experienced that in the last few days", Merkel told a crowd at an election rally in Munich, southern Germany.

Mr. Trump - whose views on climate change are "evolving," according to his top economic adviser Gary Cohn - has said he will make a decision next week on whether the USA will stay in the 2015 Paris agreement.

Though she did not mention them by name, Merkel was most likely referring to the fractured relationship Germany now shares with the U.S., as well as with the United Kingdom post-Brexit.

Her main challenger, the Social Democrat's chancellor candidate Martin Schulz, was even more outspoken in his comments about the G-7 and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation meetings last week, saying Sunday night the summits made clear Trump was a "president of the United States of America who wants to humiliate others, who presents himself like an authoritarian ruler".

"For that reason, I can only say: we Europeans really have to take our fate into our own hands".

Her comments mark a potentially radical shift in US-German relations, as well as the US' relationship with Western Europe as a whole. Although relations between Washington and Europe have been strained during periods since 1945, before Trump there has rarely been such a strong feeling from European leaders that they must turn away from Washington and prepare to face the world alone.

"It's not breaking away from anything she has said in the past", Möller said.

Polls show the chancellor is on track to secure a fourth term in the September elections.

Merkel said Sunday that the European Union is faced with an alliance in West divided by presidency of Donald Trump in the U.S. and Britain's decision to leave the European Union, adding that a recent summit of seven wealthy nations, known as G7, in Belgium, proved that EU's intimate bonds with the two countries were no longer tenable.

Merkel has been subtly distancing herself from Trump for months.

"There are no indications whether the United States will stay in the Paris Agreement or not".

But Merkel spokesman Steffen Seibert said that his boss had not meant to start a wave of Trump-bashing.

"I've never seen her in 12 years give up on anything", she said.
