House Intel Committee Escalates Effort To Get Flynn Documents And Testimony

"I know there was a sufficient basis of information and intelligence that required further investigation" by the FBI, he added.

US congressional committees and a special counsel named by the Justice Department this month are also now investigating whether there was Russian interference in the 2016 USA election.

Daniel Coats, Director of National Intelligence, declined to confirm or deny a report that say president Trump pressure him to publicly deny there was evidence of collusion between his campaign and the Russian government.

The committee is also looking for ways to obtain documentation of Trump's conversations with top intelligence and law enforcement officials involved in a separate federal Russian Federation probe.

At a separate hearing of the Senate Armed Services Committee Tuesday, Coats, who was appointed by Trump, sidestepped questions about the Post report.

The Times reports that the intelligence was the breadcrumbs leading up to evidence of discussions between Trump's surrogates and Russian officials, which spurred the Trump-Russia investigation.

One of the first casualties of this intrigue was Mike Flynn, the former national security adviser, who was dismissed.

Separately, Carter Page, a former foreign policy adviser to Trump's presidential campaign, told Reuters via text message that he would testify before the House Intelligence Committee but was "still working out details".

The Senate panel on Tuesday chose to issue two additional subpoenas to Mr Flynn's businesses and sent the letter to his lawyer asking about the legal basis for his invoking his Fifth Amendment right over documents as opposed to testimony.

Burr said all options are on the table if Flynn does not respond to the subpoenas, including the possibility of a contempt charge.

"We've been very specific in the documents now that we've requested from General Flynn", Burr said. Everything but immunity, he added.

Brennan's testimony was the first public confirmation of the worry at high levels of the United States government a year ago over suspicious contacts between Trump campaign associates and Moscow. Any immunity agreement, he said, would only take place after speaking with former FBI Director Robert Mueller, the special counsel leading the executive branch's investigation into potential collusion between Russian Federation and Trump's associates.

"It raised questions in my mind about whether Russian Federation was able to gain the cooperation of those individuals", Brennan said.

The White House, the Central Intelligence Agency and the Federal Bureau of Investigation declined to comment.

"I said American voters would be outraged by any attempt to interfere in the election", Brennan said of the August 4 call.

Brennan's comments came as investigations by the Justice Department and several Congressional committees into Russian interference increasingly focus on several people tied to the president.

Brennan said that while he was Central Intelligence Agency director he shared classified information with Russian Federation and other nations about threats related to terrorism.
