Milwaukee Sheriff Clarke, Waiting to Join Homeland Security, Blasts Plagiarism Charge

David Clarke

Overall, Clarke failed to properly attribute sources a whopping 47 times, according to the CNN. The cable network reported some of the plagiarised passages were taken from ACLU reports, the 9/11 Commission Report, a Washington Post article and a Pew Research Center report. His degree is in security studies, and while under review his paper has been removed from the school's website.

Clarke denied the allegations, saying in an email to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that "only someone with a political agenda would say this is plagiarism". The sheriff claimed last week that he will be joining the Department of Homeland Security.

On Twitter on Saturday night, Clarke responded with criticism of the CNN reporter, Andrew Kaczynski.

Milwaukee Sheriff David Clarke's alleged instances of plagiarism in his master's thesis from 2014 in security issues, might have cost him a job as an assistant secretary with the Department of Homeland Security, if he was even offered the job in the first place.

A spokesperson for the Naval Postgraduate School told CNN that they would launch a plagiarism review in light of the news.

A spokesman for Clarke confirmed to The Post that the sheriff will step down to be appointed to the position, which he expects to begin sometime in June.

Works that Clarke pulled passages from included: "a 2002 ACLU report about 'The Government's Demand for New and Unnecessary Powers After September 11, ' a 2003 ACLU report critical of the FBI's records-collection practices, a 2007 ACLU report on 'fusion centers, ' and a 2011 ACLU report on the need to overhaul secrecy laws".

If you are curious, you should check the detailed report from CNN which also includes breathtaking side-by-side comparisons of Clarke's text right next to articles and documents that appear to feature matching content. The appointment would not require Senate confirmation.

A strong conservative who runs for office as a Democrat, Clarke rose to prominence previous year with vocal support for the Trump presidential campaign. Clarke has also made controversial remarks in the past, for example, in an interview in 2016 on CNN with Don Lemon referring to Black Lives Matter (BLM) as a hate group. And in March, the Associated Press reported that four people - including a newborn baby - died at the jail within a six-month period a year ago.

Last month, prosecutors said an inmate in solitary confinement had endured seven days without any liquid, lost 35 pounds and grown weak and quiet before he died inside his cell past year.

Sheriff Clarke, original words matter.
