Union: Up to 40K walking off the job at AT&T this weekend

An AT&T sign is seen outside a branch in Rolling Meadows Illinois U.S

The Communications Workers of America union said landline workers in California, Nevada and CT, and DirecTV technicians in California and Nevada would also join the grievance strike.

Dennis Trainor, vice president of CWA District 1, said in a statement all employees will return to work on Monday at the start of their scheduled shift.

In California and Nevada, around 17,000 AT&T workers who provide phone, landline and cable services have been working without a contract for more than a year.

The workers would be joined in their protest by CWA members in AT&T's DirecTV and wireline businesses.

"Dallas-based AT&T says it has a contingency workforce" ready in preparation for the walkouts. The union highlighted the outsourcing issue again Friday, noting that AT&T has cut 12,000 US call-center jobs since 2011.

Workers had issued an ultimatum, giving company executives until 3 p.m. ET on Friday to present serious proposals.

The Communications Workers of America union - which represents AT&T wireless, wireline and DirecTV workers - set a deadline of Friday at 9 a.m. Hawaii time for reaching a new deal. Sales commissions for store employees are also a sticking point.

Union bargaining across AT&T Mobility is split up across different regions of the country, with different contracts covering different states. Our message is clear: fair contract or strike. We have made every effort to bargain in good faith with AT&T but have been met with delays and excuses.

Just over half of the employees work for the company's wireless business, primarily in call centers and retail stores, and have been without a long-term contract since February. The picketting is set to kick off at 3:00PM Eastern time on Friday. CEO Randall Stephenson got a raise of several million dollars past year, bringing his personal take-home pay up to $28.4 million in 2016. I'm a single mother and my son is about to graduate.
