France's Hollande greets Macron in first meeting since victory

BRITAIN-POLITICS-VOTE

One of Macron's immediate tasks will be to name his prime minister who will govern between now and the parliamentary elections on June 11 and 18, and perhaps beyond.

Macron, 39, founded his centrist En Marche (On The Move) movement of mostly political neophytes just a year ago on a promise to inject new blood into France's discredited political class.

The newly elected French president set out plans in his manifesto to introduce a "Buy European Act" which would effectively restrict the ability of companies operating mainly outside of the bloc to access public procurement deals.

May 8 Germany on Monday reiterated its opposition to the introduction of joint euro zone bonds a day after the election of French President-elect Emmanuel Macron, who favours more European integration.

Indeed, a record number of voters, around 9 percent, cast a blank ballot, many in protest to what they saw as a choice between a far-right extremist and a former investment banker turned Socialist, turned centrist with little political experience.

The France Insoumise (France Unbowed) of firebrand leftist Jean-Luc Melenchon was trailing in fourth with 13-15 percent, ahead of the tattered Socialists of outgoing President Francois Hollande on eight-nine percent.

At Monday's ceremony on the Champs-Elysees, Mr Hollande approached Mr Macron and gripped him by the shoulder before the two men walked beneath the Arc de Triomphe.

Monday also marked decades of peace in Western Europe, something Macron made a cornerstone of his campaign against Le Pen's brand of populism.

Leaders from across the globe congratulated Ennamuel Macron on his appointment as French president.

Mainstream parties on the left and right that were frozen out of Sunday's runoff in a first for modern France, also are regrouping, aiming to clip Macron's wings and impose their political agenda, via parliament, on his five-year term. In interviews Monday, party officials said a new name would aim to broaden its appeal.

But National Front vice-president Florian Philippot said Ms Le Pen remains the "uncontested" leader of the party even after her heavy defeat.

Trump, who had hinted at support for Le Pen during the campaign, tweeted congratulations to Macron on a "big win" and said he looked forward to working with him.

The scant coverage from mostly French-language media estimated that the demonstrators calling for Macron's resignation numbered in the thousands.
