During the daytime, ESPN is putting 'SportsCenter' on the back burner

Mike Greenberg

ESPN formally unveiled its new daytime lineup on Tuesday at its upfront presentation for advertisers in NY, and while the details had been out there in rumor form for some time, the announcement hammered home one specific point: The daytime versions of "SportsCenter" as we know them on ESPN are being de-emphasized as the network embraces personality-driven ways to fill the time between live sporting events. It has been long rumored that Greenberg wanted to relocate from ESPN's CT headquarters to New York City. ESPN, like many cable networks, has steadily lost subscribers over the last several years.

ESPN president John Skipper announced Mike Greenberg, who recently signed a new contract that will pay him a reported $6.5 million per year, will host his own variety show from 7:00-10:00 a.m. EST. More details about the show will be announced at a later date. Paul Pierce, the former National Basketball Association star, appeared ("I'm still pulling for the Celtics", he said), as did numerous network's biggest names, including Scott Van Pelt, Suzy Kolber, Jon Gruden and Mayne.

In another effort to show strength following the layoffs, ESPN trotted about 50 of its highest-profile personalities onto the stage all at once.

The network has also signed new deals with other ESPN veterans, including Sage Steele and Hannah Storm, who will have a new role that includes hosting prime-time specials.

The outspoken sports columnist and "First Take" analyst bailed on ESPN back in April and now co-hosts "Skip and Shannon" with Shannon Sharpe on Fox Sports 1. These will be shown "multiple times per hour" and will be brief "up-to-the-minute" news updates, similar to the "SportsCenter" updates already heard on ESPN Radio. Torre joined ESPN in 2012. The three shows that follow "SportsCenter:AM" on the schedule all are re-airings of shows from that day: Greenberg's new program, "First Take" and "NFL Live". He joined ESPN in November 1997 as an anchor for ESPNEWS and has served as host of NFL Live since its inception in 2003.
