Charges possible for Golden Gate Bridge climbing daredevils

A climber scales the Golden Gate Bridge

In video posted on YouTube, the two 18-year-olds from Wisconsin climb suspension cables before doing backflips and somersaults on a walkway, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

As if standing at the height of 746ft wasn't enough of a thrill, the daring duo made a decision to dangle their entire bodies over the edge of one of the bridge's towers, with only their fingertips stopping them from making the long fall to the ground below.

Climbing on the Golden Gate Bridge is a misdemeanor, but it's unclear if the men will face charges, according to KTVU. "These climbers' reckless actions could have caused immeasurable harm to those driving below".

"I don't want to say too much about how we got past security", Teatime said.

Despite climbing the bridge - and trespassing near it - being completely illegal, Teatime still called his climb a "must-do".

The daredevil said he always wanted to scale the span, so during Easter break in early April he and his partner, who goes by the pseudonym Tommy Rector - who is in his early 20s - flew to San Francisco to make the climb. "And if they do, we will bring the full consequences that we can, both civilly and criminally, to bear upon them", Mulligan said.

While the video has gone viral, there were no authorities around at the time of the stunt and isn't sure if they have got the footage yet. "The Golden Gate Bridge is not an amusement park ride, it is vital public infrastructure and it's a symbol of our community", General Manager Dennis Mulligan told ABC 7.

Mulligan and Golden Gate Bridge Patrol Captain Lisa Locati said in their Tuesday news conference that the young men put themselves and the drivers traveling below at risk.

"In many areas where you could hurt the bridge, we have different types of sensors that trigger an alarm, there is an audible and then that camera pops up on the big screen".

The daredevils said they would be willing to consult with officials on how to improve security.

Clemens said the district is now working with Homeland Security, the California Highway Patrol, and other agencies to investigate the incident. "Our security systems are developed to keep people from harming the structure".
