Trump pledges to move quickly to name new Federal Bureau of Investigation director

Protest outside Federal Building over the

Only 29 percent of Americans approved of President Trump's firing of FBI Director James Comey, while 38 percent disapproved, but 32 percent of those surveyed said they didn't know enough about it to form an opinion, according to a NBC News-Wall Street Journal poll released Sunday.

Meanwhile, President Trump is facing growing questions about whether he secretly recorded his conversations with Mr Comey.

The resulting media chaos reportedly threw the White House into turmoil, as aides and surrogates worked to craft a message around the president's evolving statements to the media.

Luttig, the general counsel for Boeing Corp., is viewed as a conservative legal powerhouse from his tenure as a judge on the 4th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals and his time as a Justice Department lawyer. In the aftermath of Comey's dismissal, Cornyn said Trump was "within his authority" to fire him and said it would not affect the investigation of possible Russian ties to Trump's presidential campaign.

Lawmakers are urging the president to steer clear of appointing any politicians.

Trump's frustrations came to a head this week with the firing of Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey, who was overseeing the probe into his campaign's possible ties to Russia's election meddling. McCabe became acting director after Comey was sacked, but has shown a repeated willingness to break from White House explanations of the ouster and its characterizations of the Russian Federation investigation. By week's end, he was musing about cutting back on the White House's televised press briefings.

Mr. Trump spoke with reporters as he headed to Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, to deliver a commencement address.

On Friday, the White House denied reports that President Trump had also asked Mr Comey to pledge loyalty to him.

Writing unsubstantial, provocative tweets while simultaneously overseeing the significant process of choosing a director for the F.B.I., there is a growing move to hold Trump to account.

It was Trump's first public event outside the White House since Comey's ouster.

Trump has warned Comey against talking to the media about his firing, threatening him with recordings of their private talks.

"James Comey better hope that there are no "tapes" of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!" Martin Heinrich, D-N.M., if it is "accurate that the rank-and-file no longer supported Director Comey?"

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham of SC said on Sunday there may come a time when a special prosecutor is needed but not now.

After Trump made a decision to fire Comey, he was told by aides that Democrats would likely react positively to the news given the role many believe Comey played in Hillary Clinton's defeat previous year.

Trump confidants say Bannon has been marginalized on major decisions, including Comey's firing, after clashing with Kushner. "Nearly all of them are very well-known", Trump said aboard the plane that took him to Lynchburg, Virginia, where he gave the commencement address at Liberty University.

Comey was overseeing two important investigations that shaped Republican Trump's previous year victory against his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.
