Trump hosting Turkey's Erdogan as tensions simmer

Trump Erdogan seek to mend strained ties at White House meeting

President Trump welcomes Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to the White House tomorrow for what could be an awkward first meeting.

Trump said Tuesday that the USA would ensure the PKK has "no safe quarter".

Last month, the country narrowly passed constitutional amendments concentrating greater powers in an executive presidency, and allowing Erdogan to serve up to an additional 15 years in office.

"The Turkish president expressed great interest in investment in our country", the Polish prime minister's office said in a statement, adding that Erdogan would like to see revenue from trade exchange grow to Dollars 7-10 billion yearly.

US military officials have contended the YPG is the only force on the ground capable of forcing ISIS out of Raqqa in the near future.

Ankara regards the YPG as simply the Syrian arm of the "terrorist" PKK, which has waged a deadly insurgency inside Turkey since 1984, and Erdogan is anxious the war against the IS group will leave his deadly enemy in charge of a US-armed statelet on his southern frontier.

Acutely aware of how the USA and the worldwide community have condoned the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps' (IRGC) running an army of foreign Shia fighters to support Syria's Bashar al-Assad in return for the nuclear deal, the Sunni-Arab majority of the region will look on this "very selective" US war on terrorism as yet another "tool in the box" to target them.

US military officials view the Kurds there as key in the fight against ISIS, but the Turkish government argues they're terrorists.

The U.S. sees the Kurdish force, the YPG, as a key part in the fight against Islamic State and the effort to oust the militants from their de facto capital in Raqqa. But Erdogan lost his main supporter in Trump's inner circle when Michael Flynn, the national security adviser, was forced to resign after only 24 days in office. But Turkey, a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation ally of the USA, is furious over the decision and considers the Kurdish fighters the United States is backing to be terrorists.

Trump was one of very few world leaders who called Erdogan to congratulate him on winning the referendum, which was preceded by widespread arrests of his opponents and was so narrowly won that many questioned its legitimacy.

"These are contrary developments to our relations and strategic agreement with the U.S. We do not want those issues, [.] we will discuss them", Erdogan said.

Putin said he had also discussed with Erdogan the Turkish leader's concern over USA arms deliveries to Kurds in Syria.

However, Trump also has a record of turning such criticism over by going tough on other nations.

The Turkish government objected to the planned arming of the Kurds, saying they were not necessary to fight IS and hailing Turkey's own experience in pushing back the jihadists.

Turkey and the US have been at odds particularly on a couple of issues that held bilateral ties captured. The job was so tightly aligned with Turkish government interests that Flynn was widely criticized for failing to disclose his entanglements. Erdogan is also likely to pressure the U.S.to extradite cleric Fethullah Gulen, who he blames for an attempted coup last July. Now we will have the final meeting, and then we will make our final decision. The decision has pitted the two main USA allies in the Syrian war against each other.

"I don't think it would even have crossed the president's mind".

Mr. Trump was asked by reporters following the statement about his alleged disclosure of classified information during his meeting last week with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, a meeting he on Tuesday called "very, very successful".
