GOP candidate for Federal Bureau of Investigation says no special counsel for inquiry

Marco Rubio for president before backing Trump in May 2016. At the Justice Department, she worked in a variety of jobs including leading the Office of Intelligence Policy and Review, which helped oversee intelligence-gathering activities related to the nation's top secret surveillance court. Former aides describe him as a detail-obsessed and thoughtful boss. Larry ThompasonA deputy attorney general under President George W. Bush, Thompson served as the department's No. 2 from 2001 to 2003.

Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.), who did not interview for the job, also took himself out of the running on Monday, stating he "would not be the right person" for the job.

Like most of his GOP colleagues, Cornyn has said a special prosecutor isn't needed and has expressed confidence in Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who is heading the investigation.

When asked on "Face the Nation" last month if it was appropriate for Trump to comment on the ongoing Russian Federation investigation, Cornyn said "sometimes I think this is a distraction from what we should be doing". "Almost all of them are very well known". He was one of four people scheduled to interview Saturday to serve as the FBI's new director, after James Comey was abruptly fired.

"I have always considered public service to be a great privilege".

But the problem is the political atmosphere in Washington.

Republicans control 52 Senate seats, another factor that Suri said may lead some Republicans to try and convince Cornyn to hold his position.

He's now the majority whip, the No. 2 Senate leader. Trump's nominee will fail if three Republicans vote against their president.

"I think it's now time to pick somebody that comes from within the ranks or is such a reputation that has no political background at all", he said.

Yet whoever takes the Federal Bureau of Investigation job will be on notice that Trump will expect personal loyalty. "Senators generally do better in confirmation hearings and you add that to the fact that Cornyn has been vetted in every way you possibly can". He's a former Texas attorney general and judge on the Texas Supreme Court.

Cornyn has also occasionally criticized Trump — albeit gently. But unless Majority Leader Mitch McConnell steps aside, Cornyn's rise in leadership has peaked. While Cornyn's term as whip ends next year, he would still remain an influential senior senator with a term that runs through 2020. Comey served for three and a half years before being dismissed by Trump.

While never particularly in Trump's thrall, Cornyn has been a loyal partisan since Trump entered the White House.
