Facebook adds Snapchat-like camera filters to Instagram

Instagram app

These new filters can place wacky effects on your face. People already use Instagram's location tags in the main feed to explore cities and research new restaurants via photo and video highlights, but location-based Stories will now let you see more off-the-cuff content. They'll follow your movements so they appear to remain static on your face. This will reveal eight filters which will be superimposed on your face, including various crowns, koala ears and black rimmed glasses with swirling math equations.

Facebook-owned Instagram on Tuesday announced several new features, including face filters similar to the ones Snapchat debuted about 19 months ago that turned users into puppies and puking rainbow faces.

Instagram has also added the ability to post videos that play backwards with a new Rewind feature (another inspired by Snapchat), and a customizable hashtag sticker that you can apply to your images. The company is expanding its app's camera modes with a new "Rewind" video format. Record a video as you normally would and the playback will be in reverse. You can select and customise the hashtag before adding it to your story. The sticker can be moved around and resized like any other. Going beyond Snapchat The new features will help Instagram to sustain its lead over Snapchat. Despite criticisms of Instagram's unoriginality, Stories have clearly been a success.

Instagram's fight to stay ahead of Snapchat involves stealing its best features so that users have no reason to switch. Since then, it seems that Facebook has been intent on copying Snapchat's success instead. With Snapchat refusing to launch an app for Windows 10 Mobile, however, Instagram can easily fill that niche. After taking a selfie, users can share it to their friends via Instagram Direct or share it more widely on Instagram Stories. Instagram says no. At TechCrunch Disrupt, the company's product head Kevin Weil explained why.
