Ransomware Attack Hits Businesses Across The World

"The attack targeted machines that use older software (Windows XP, Windows 2003, Windows 8) and USA companies tend to adopt modern systems on a more regular basis", said Kevin O'Brien, chief executive officer of GreatHorn, a Boston-based security company. Many workers had already logged off their computers on Friday when the malware began spreading, wreaking havoc on the U.K.'s hospital network, Germany's railway system, and companies around the world.

The attack has hit more than 200,000 victims across the world since Friday and is seen as an "escalating threat", said Rob Wainwright, the head of Europol, Europe's policing agency.

The malware attack first emerged on Friday night but there were concerns of more disruption as workers switch on their computers this morning.

However, security researchers say firms that fail to keep their software up-to-date are also responsible for the ransomware outbreak. In Indonesia, the ransomware locked patient files on computers in two hospitals in the capital, Jakarta, causing delays. However, he said it's only a matter of time before such a version exists.

"We haven't fully dodged this bullet at all until we're patched against the vulnerability itself", Kalember said.

They advised those whose networks have been effectively shut down by the ransomware attack not to make the payment demanded - the equivalent of $300, paid in the digital currency bitcoin, delivered to a likely untraceable destination that consists merely of a lengthy string of letters and numbers.

A doctor who said hospitals could be vulnerable to ransomware one day before a virus struck the NHS has warned this could "just be the beginning".

A global cyber attack leveraging hacking tools believed to have been developed by the U.S. National Security Agency has infected tens of thousands of computers in almost 100 countries, disrupting Britain's health system and global shipper FedEx.

Chinese media reported Sunday that students at several universities were hit, blocking access to their thesis papers and dissertation presentations. That low-cost move redirected the attacks to the server of Kryptos Logic, the security company he works for. Then, they pointed the domain to a sinkhole, or a server that collects and analyzes malware traffic.

Officials urged organizations and companies to immediately update their security software.

United Kingdom defense secretary Michael Fallon said Sunday that Britain's nuclear submarines were safe from cyberattack. "It won't be too late as long as they're not infected". The tools appeared stolen by hackers, who dumped them on the internet.

NSA does not discuss its capabilities, and some computer experts say the MS17-010 exploit was developed by unknown parties using the name Equation Group (which may also be linked to NSA). These patches work for updated versions only and hence the users were advised to update their systems.

There has been a lot of speculation that numerous affected NHS computers and devices were running Windows XP - an old operating system that is no longer supported by Microsoft.

So this is a very serious, serious problem. "We have been in touch with Microsoft and others.even they have not got any reports", Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), director general, Sanjay Bahl told PTI.
