John Oliver Demands Congress Take Action After Trump's Firing of James Comey

The termination letter from President Trump to FBI Director James B. Comey

US-based comedian John Oliver has launched a savage attack at New Zealand's Prime Minister - after Bill English declared the host of "Last Week Tonight" wasn't amusing.

After a week of unbelievable news becoming reality, late night hosts across the political spectrum criticised Donald Trump over the firing of James Comey. Standing up to Trump isn't a partisan issue, Oliver argued.

"At the very, very least they need to acknowledge what has happened is fucked up, and not continue to give non-answers like the one Paul Ryan did when asked about Trump's tape recordings threat", Oliver said, before playing a clip of the House Speaker sheepishly deflecting a reporter's question about Trump's shocking tweets. As for what, if any, measures will be taken to rebuke Trump and his associates for going about Comey's firing in such a brash manner, that remains to be seen. Trump posted last week, after sharing his version of his conversations with Comey in an NBC interview with Lester Holt. Since then, the president admitted the FBI's investigation into his campaign's possible ties to Russian Federation influenced his decision, leaving Sean Spicer and others to answer (or not) questions about the matter. Oliver replied to Trump.

Referring to Trump's recollection that Comey had reassured him that he was not under investigation, Oliver said that trying to put words in Comey's mouth as he was being fired was "just inherently suspicious". "It's the kind of response that asks three questions: one, can he really be this stupid?" Two, does he really think we as a country are this stupid?

But Oliver does know that it's time to Congress to step up and do something about this mess.

Oliver then went after Congress, hitting the legislative branch - now entirely in Republican hands - for failing to stand up to Trump. It's on you. Because when you've got the presidential equivalent of a 5-year-old s---ting on the salad bar of a Ruby Tuesday's, at some point, you stop blaming the 5-year-old and you start blaming the people who are not stopping him. Stop that boy. That's what I'm saying.
