Ian Brady dies at high security psychiatric hospital on Merseyside aged 79

Brady took a High Court case in March 2000 to allow him to starve himself to death

Hindley died aged 60 in 2002.

In their trial, the judge described Brady as "wicked beyond belief".

Brady and his lover Myra Hindley killed five children and teenagers in and around the northern city of Manchester between 1963 and 1965, burying four of them on remote moorland overlooking the city.

Brady has never revealed the location of the remains of Keith Benner, who was 12 when he was killed.

Edward was lured from a gay bar to a home then shared by Hindley and Brady on the Hattersley estate at Hyde.

John was offered a lift home by Brady and Hindley from a market in Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire, on the evening of 23 November 1963.

She was lured to the moors by Hindley who said she had lost her gloves there and needed help finding them.

She tried to find favour with the court by unsuccessfully trying to help police find the missing body of Bennett.

Keith was lured into Hindley's Mini pick-up as he walked to his grandmother's house in the Longsight area of Manchester.

Pathologists said it was impossible to say if she had been sexually assaulted.

In a heartbreaking interview filmed before her death, Winnie Johnson spoke openly of her longing for the truth about her tragic 12-year-old son Keith.

Holding back the information was believed to be Brady maintaining a last element of control.

The murders of John, Keith, Lesley Ann and Edward followed.

One tape featured the voice of Downey, filled with pain and fear, whimpering: "I want to see my mummy".

The little girl was also buried on the moors. "Monster Brady is dead", said the front page of The Sun.

But Smith, horrified, called police who found his body wrapped in a plastic sheet and the murder weapon.

Lesley Anne Downey's body was eventually found on 10 October, and John Kilbride was discovered a week and a half later. Brady later claimed it was Hindley who murdered Lesley Ann.

Terry Kilbride, whose brother John, 12, was also murdered by Brady, has urged the killer to reveal his secret before he dies. Hindley and Brady were jailed in the 1960s for the murders of five children.

Brady escaped the hangman's noose as the death penalty was abolished just months earlier and was handed three life sentences.

The savage nature of the Moors Murderers' killings made them among the most hated criminals in Britain.

Britain's longest-serving prisoner, was being held in the high-security Ashworth psychiatric hospital in Merseyside where he had been force-fed for many years after going in hunger strike from 1999.
