Salvador Sobral Of Portugal Wins Eurovision Song Contest

Salvador Sobral, left, and his sister Luisa Sobral, are lit by a camera flash, as they arrive for a news conference holding the Eurovision award, at the Lisbon airport, Sunday, May 14 2017, after winning the Final of the Euro. Sobral, 27, impressed everyone – journalists, critics, but especially the public – with his jazz style ballad, written by his sister and marked by simplicity, using no visual effects except the image of a forest behind him.

Sobral says that "I'm exhausted".

"This prize is going to trigger a certain madness about me but I know it is short-lived", he said at a brief press conference.

Eurovision winners usually have a shooting star-like trajectory that flares out shortly after their victory, but the contest has also launched some talents with long-standing careers - most notably Abba and Celine Dion.

A year ago its contestant Jamala won with a song called "1944", referring to the Stalin-era deportation of her Crimean Tatar ethnic group from the Black Sea peninsula.

However, on 13 April 2017, Russian Federation announced their withdrawal from the Eurovision Song Contest. "Bravo Salvador! Bravo Portugal", Costa said. "Bravo Salvador! Bravo Portugal".

The dust has barely settled after this year's Eurovision Song Contest, but after three strong representations in the global competition, Australia will be hoping to get an invite to compete next year in Portugal.

Francesco Gabbani of Italy had been the bookmakers' favourite but ended up sixth, even though his act seemed the epitome of Eurovision's cheerfully tacky aesthetics - singing a driving number about spirituality, accompanied by someone in a gorilla suit.

He said the victor was "bringing music back to the Eurovision Song Contest". "I think that Salvador is unique and that he is able to transmit lovely things to all of us, even those that do not understand our language".

Bulgaria's Kristian Kostov took the second place with 615 points, followed by Moldova's participant with 374 points. His win ensured Portugal would host next year's Eurovision contest.

"I just wanted to sing a lovely song as it is - it's in Portuguese". "Music is not fireworks, music is feeling, so let's try to really change this and bring music back".
