Manhunt for hackers behind global cyberattack

Nations grapple with huge cyberattack but more's coming

"Ransonware that has been dubbed 'WannaCry" security is one of the worst and wide spread malware they ever even. Ransomware cyber attacks cause hospitals of U.K.to cancel their patient's appointment.

Around a fifth of trusts were hit in Friday's attack, which affected hundreds of organisations around the world.

Britain's National Cyber Security Centre, part of the GCHQ spy agency, said it was aware of a cyber incident and was working with NHS Digital and the police to investigate.

Europol said a special task force at its European Cybercrime Centre was "specially created to assist in such investigations and will play an important role in supporting the investigation".

Friday's attack was the latest in the growing menace of ransomware in which hackers deliver files to computers that automatically encrypt their data, making it unusable until a ransom is paid.

Payment is demanded within three days or the price is doubled, and if none is received within seven days the locked files will be deleted, according to the screen message.

But experts and government alike warn against ceding to the hackers' demands.

"It only guarantees that the malicious actors receive the victim's money, and in some cases, their banking information".

"It's particularly concerning when you're talking about widely-available software, when the impact on the people is going to be the public at large, not the handful of targets an agency might have", Singh Guliani told CNNTech.

Microsoft said the situation was "painful" and that it was taking "all possible actions to protect our customers".

The ransomware exploits a vulnerability in Microsoft Windows that was purportedly identified by the U.S. National Security Agency for its own intelligence-gathering purposes.

"Unfortunately the ransomware "business model" is very profitable for cyber criminals and we've seen multiple reports of organisations paying out in the past", he said.

In Russia, government agencies insisted that all attacks had been resolved. Cybersecurity experts have said the majority of the attacks targeted Russia, Ukraine and Taiwan. The country's banking system was also attacked, although no problems were detected, as was the railway system. Universities in China, Italy and Greece were also hit.

A massive cyberattack brought computers to a halt on Friday and Saturday, the malware affecting over one lakh computers and systems in almost 150 nations worldwide, ranging from the UK National Health Service to a French carmaker with an alliance plant in Chennai, the German railways, the Andhra Pradesh police and entire Russian systems.

Technical staff scrambled on Sunday to patch computers and restore infected ones, amid fears that the ransomware worm that stopped auto factories, hospitals, shops and schools could wreak fresh havoc on Monday when employees log back on.

Infected computers appear to largely be out-of-date devices that organizations deemed not worth the price of upgrading or, in some cases, machines involved in manufacturing or hospital functions that proved too hard to patch without possibly disrupting crucial operations, security experts said.

Renault said on Saturday it had halted manufacturing at plants in Sandouville, France, and Romania to prevent the spread of ransomware in its systems. The spread of the attack appears to have been thwarted by private cyber security researchers who identified and triggered the malware's "kill switch", which halted the attacks before it spread throughout US networks, a senior USA intelligence official confirmed, but it is unclear whether, the official said, a modified attack will soon be launched.
