It's do-or-die for Trump, GOP health care bill

The $1.1 trillion fiscal-year 2017 budget, which funds the federal government through September 30, includes concessions from both Democrats and the GOP; however, high-profile parts of the Trump administration's budget proposal were withheld.

Trump, taking to Twitter, also vented frustration about the 60-vote threshold on legislation in the Senate thanks to the filibuster.

- President Trump tweeted Tuesday that the country needs a "good 'shutdown, '" as well advocated for changing Senate rules, in a pair of tweets where he complained about the congressional negotiating process.

The president concluded by saying the government should shut down in September to fix the "mess". Last month, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell expanded that move to secure approval of Trump's Supreme Court nominee, Neil Gorsuch.

Mick Mulvaney, the White House budget director, told reporters Tuesday afternoon that the reason Trump floated the possibility of a shutdown was all because of Democrats' happiness at the spending deal.

Democrats have expressed satisfaction with the agreement, which keeps the government running through September 30, the end of fiscal 2017.

Just hours after President Donald Trump 's tweeted a call for a "good "shutdown" of the us government , the White House blamed his threat on Democrats.

Democrats are trying to "cover up the fact that they cut a deal with president Trump", he said, and wanted a government shutdown, but didn't get it. "And we didn't do any touting like the Democrats did, by the way", he said at an unrelated White House event.

He touted $21 billion in additional funding for defense, as well as additional funding for border security, and he also criticized Democrats for claiming victory on health benefits for retired coal miners, which he said was a Trump priority from day one.

He added a shutdown would show American voters that Washington "really was as broken as they thought it was when they voted for (Trump) for president".

One wish Trump may get is his wish for new Republicans in the Senate after 2018, as 10 Democrats are running in states he won a year ago.

Schumer has celebrated the spending bill as a hard-fought deal across the aisle and an example of "working together in the best traditions of the Senate", but he effectively said Trump lost out.

A Democratic lawmaker said liberals got what they wanted out of the deal lawmakers reached to avert a government shutdown. I think that's a defensible position, one we'll deal with in September. "They were desperate to make this administration look like it couldn't function".
