EU, US to discuss possible airline laptop ban

Top European officials are set to talk with the Head of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on Friday, as the EU seeks information from the US about a possible ban on larger electronic devices on flights from Europe.

Ban USA on the hand electronics in hand Luggage now as for some of the flights from the airports of North Africa and the Middle East.

The move prompted the U.S. out of fears that a bomb could be concealed in electronic devices.

Peck noted that on March 31 ASTA had sent a letter to Department of Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly asking a series of questions about the existing ban, including how long it will be in effect, the differences between the U.S.' and U.K.'s ban, the risk associated with checking lithium ion batteries, and other issues.

Department of Homeland Security officials will speak with airline industry representatives on Thursday about the electronics ban on aircraft as the agency considers an expansion of a security measure, according to DHS and industry sources.

While DHS spokesman David Lapan told the news agency that no official announcement would come Thursday, he did confirm DHS Secretary John Kelly met with United States senators from relevant oversight committees to brief them on classified issues including "threats to aviation".

She said the European Union had no new information about a specific security concern.

An expansion of the restrictions to flights from Europe could have a substantially greater impact on air travel.

Yesterday, DHS and airline industry officials should have been in a meeting, discussing security.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security organized a telephone conference with "key European partners" - France, Britain, Germany, Spain and Italy.

"We're expecting something to happen, we're just not sure exactly what or when", said a senior executive at a major European airline. No official decision on the matter has been made.

A European Commission spokeswoman said a telephone call between top EU officials and their United States peers had provided "a very constructive exchange of views".

The UK followed up with a similar ban, and now there is a good chance it will affect flights from the UK to the United States soon. Baggage in cargo usually goes through a more sophisticated screening process than carry-on bags.

CNN cited unnamed intelligence officials saying that terrorists would have a more hard time detonating an explosive remotely and that placing the laptops and other devices in the cargo bay might reduce damage even if a bomb were to explode.
