Trump, top Russian Federation envoy to meet at White House

U.S. President Donald Trump could meet with Vladimir Putin’s top diplomat at the White House on Wednesday a U.S. official and a person with knowledge of the plans said

The Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov is set to appear for diplomatic talks in the White House for the first time in four years. Last week, the two spoke by phone twice and their country's leaders, Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, spoke once.

"Was he fired? You're kidding", Lavrov said sarcastically, feigning surprise as he started his day of meetings in Washington.

According to the US State Department, Lavrov and Tillerson will discuss Ukraine and Syria, among other issues. Tillerson ignored questions about Trump and Comey.

It's the highest level US-Russia meeting since Trump became president.

Comey's dismissal escalated concerns in both parties that Trump may be trying to undermine an investigation that appears to be gaining steam.

At a Senate hearing Monday, former acting Attorney General Sally Yates said she warned Trump's White House in January that Flynn "essentially could be blackmailed" by the Russians because he apparently had lied to his bosses about his contacts with Kislyak. He calls the various investigations a "hoax" driven by Democrats still bitter that their candidate, Hillary Clinton, was defeated previous year. His previous visit to Washington took place in 2013, while the previous visit of a Russian President to the U.S. was held in 2010.

On Tuesday, media reported that Lavrov would meet Trump during the working visit to the United States. He visit to the U.S. will continue through to May 11. Yet Trump's stunning decision on the eve of the meeting to fire the FBI director overseeing a Russia-related investigation injected further intrigue into Lavrov's first visit to Washington since 2013.
