Chibok schoolgirls: 'One refused to be released'

A girl who was kidnapped by Nigerian terror group Boko Haram three years ago has made a decision to remain in captivity to stay with her husband, the government has said. "We want to assure Nigerians that the army and the Nigerian government won't relent until this battle is totally over", he added.

Garba Shehu said that originally they had been negotiating the release of 83 girls, but one said she wanted to remain.

The Red Cross had on Monday explained its rolein freeing the girls.

There are still Chibok girls in Boko Haram captivity and the Nigerian government is in talks to have the others released.

Numerous students from the group of girls who escaped have been given an education by the New Foundation School, a program of the American University of Nigeria created especially for them - and the girls who were released in October are expected to join them.

October 13, 2016: Spokesman for Nigeria's president confirms 21 Chibok girls have been freed, a result of government negotiations with Boko Haram.

Twenty-one of their classmates were freed in October previous year; three had previously been found or escaped. Soon after the initial kidnapping, some of the students escaped, and past year, 21 girls were released as part of an International Red Cross operation.

In a statement by Oby Ezekwesili and Aisha Yesufu, the co-conveners of the Bring Back Our Girls group, the BBOG said it had begun the verification of the identities of the rescued girls.

Numerous girls from the school in Chibok, state of Borno, were Christian but were later photographed in Muslim dress by the militants.

The eight-year Boko Haram insurgency has killed some 20,000 people and forced at least 2.6 million others to flee their homes.

He said, "Chibok is not one village; the girls are from several communities".

Families say 113 of the Chibok schoolgirls remain missing.

Eighty-two of Nigeria's Chibok schoolgirls are free thanks to a prisoner swap between the Nigerian government and Boko Haram.

Nigeria Crisis Response staff Roxane Hill reported that "we don't know when and if the girls will be allowed to return to Chibok".

The Special Rapporteurs and Working Groups are part of what is known as the Special Procedures of the Human Rights Council.

A list of the girls' names was published on Sunday evening and photographs of them have been sent to Chibok and the surrounding area for cross-checking.

He urged the government to help the families of the girls to nurture them, for their proper reintegration into the society.
