World number one Andy Murray crashed out 6-3 6-3 in the third round of the Madrid Open on Thursday to 20-year-old Borna Coric as his hard start to the clay court season continued.

Coric, ranked 59th in the world. claimed a convincing 6-3, 6-3 win at La Caja Mágica.

Murray produced a lacklustre display against the Croatian 20-year-old to lose 6-3 6-3, his defeat starkly contrasting the fortunes of Nadal and Djokovic, who advanced in straight sets against Nick Kyrgios and Feliciano Lopez respectively.

2 Novak Djokovic reached the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open on Thursday with a straight set victory (6-4 7-5) over Feliciano Lopez.

He will now take on Grigor Dimitrov or Dominic Thiem in the quarter-finals and Murray was disappointed with his performance.

"Novak is someone that I don t have good record (against)", said the Japanese.

"Making mistakes very early in a lot of the rallies, I wasn't building any points so I didn't help myself find a way into the match to start playing better and that was disappointing because you're not always going to play your best tennis but you can still find ways to make it hard for your opponent and I didn't do that at all".

Murray was made to pay for missing break point opportunities early in both sets as Coric adjusted better to the indoor conditions with the roof at the Manolo Santana court closed due to rain.

Djokovic was dominant on serve throughout, facing only one break point in the opening game of the second set.

"I got to stay really positive and I got to play great tennis to beat him".

Nadal faces David Goffin in Friday's quarter-finals after the Belgian beat world number six Milos Raonic 6-4, 6-2.

He will next play against sixth-seeded Kei Nishikori of Japan, who defeated David Ferrer 6-4, 6-3 to deny the Spaniard his 700th career win. "I try to enjoy my big challenge tomorrow".

Murray had two break points of his own in the next game but he could not take them and he was becoming increasingly irked at how the match was panning out as it reached a crucial stage at 4-3 to Coric.

In the women's Madrid Open, third seed Simona Halep remains on course to defend her title as she thrashed American Coco Vandeweghe 61, 61.

Halep faces Latvian Anastasija Sevastova in Friday s semi-finals after the world number 22 saw off Kiki Bertens 6-3, 6-3.

France's Kristina Mladenovic also made it through to the final four.
