3 dead, including former West Memphis police officer, in rural Arkansas

Arkansas State Police spokesman Bill Sadler, speaking at a news conference Thursday afternoon at the Dardanelle Police Department, said James Bowden, 32, was taken into custody at 2:40 p.m.

Arkansas State Police officials on the scene are not yet providing any additional details, and say this is an "extremely sensitive situation". He said the suspected shooter was in a home in rural Arkansas and that officers are attempting to make contact with the individual. Their bodies remained at the location as police negotiated with Bowden on Thursday afternoon. Mainhart was responding to a call about a disturbance at the home near Dardanelle, which is about 65 miles (105 kilometers) west of Little Rock.

The woman who was in the residence was not named and she was not wounded, police said.

The agency did not release details about the suspect or how the suspect was captured.

An earlier version of this story was corrected to show the deaths happened about 65 miles west of Little Rock, not 170 miles west.

At approximately 7:18 AM today (Thursday, May 11, 2017), Lieutenant Mainhart initiated a traffic stop after identifying a vehicle believed to be associated with a disturbance call at 10024 Gum Springs Road.

Bowden's father also told the TV station that the deputy had fired a Taser at the suspect, who allegedly thought he had been shot and then fired back, fatally wounding the officer.

The suspect in the killing of an Arkansas sheriff's deputy and two other people has been taken into custody, authorities said.

When police found his body, they found the bodies of two other people who had been killed. Police say authorities are negotiating with a suspect who is holed up in a home.

Lt. Mainhart had served the citizens of Yell County as a law enforcement officer for five years and previously retired from the West Memphis Police Department following a career of more than 20 years, stated an ASP news release. Sadler says that deputy was fatally shot during the traffic stop.
