Teen's plea for free Wendy's nuggets sets retweet record

DeGeneres" tweet heard "round the world features a menagerie of celebrities, and until now, was the reigning juggernaut of twitter with 3.43M retweets.

Carter's certificate read: 'This certificate certifies that Carter Wilkinson has the most retweeted tweets in the history of ever (sorry Ellen) #nuggsforcarter #consideritdone'.

In April, 16-year-old Carter Wilkerson from Nevada asked Wendy's how many tweets he would need to get free chicken nuggets from the company for a year. The fast-food chain's reply of "18 million" set off a race that would end with better lives for America's homeless youth.

The post, which read "Help me please".

DeGeneres encouraged fans to retweet Wilkerson to help him get his nuggets, but with the stipulation that they retweet her Oscars pic as well so she can stay in the lead.

Late last month, Ellen had Carter on her show to talk about his internet notoriety, the campaign, and to warn him not to get too close to her record-setting Oscars selfie. "Consider it done", Carter responded.

Wendy's says Wilkerson has earned the nuggets despite not hitting the 18 million mark.

It's a good day for Twitter user Carter Wilkerson. The fast food chain is also going to make a donation of $100,000 to the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption in Wilkerson's name.

There's further evidence that social media and participation trophies are clearly ruining entire generations after a teen was rewarded with chicken nuggets despite falling well short of expectations.

It should be noted that DeGeneres's tweet, while star-studded, wasn't premised on a campaign to get re-shared, like Wilkerson's.
