Ismail Haniya elected new political chief of Hamas

Islamic Jihad rejects Palestine state within 1967 borders

But Al-Ahmed also said Hamas must give up its control of Gaza, something Haniyeh has refused to do.

Many Western countries classify Hamas as a terrorist group over its failure to renounce violence, recognise Israel's right to exist and accept existing interim Israeli-Palestinian peace agreements.

The moves come with 82-year-old Palestinian president Abbas losing popularity and a behind-the-scenes succession battle taking shape. Hamas ignored the dismissal and a Haniyeh-led Hamas government remained in place in Gaza, while Abbas appointed a rival administration in the West Bank.

The year he graduated, 1987, marked the start of the first Palestinian mass uprising against Israeli occupation, known as the First Intifada, and the subsequent founding of Hamas as an official group.

The PLO is considered the worldwide representative of Palestinians both in the Palestinian territories and the diaspora. Israel, too, viewed him as the only legitimate leader of the Palestinians, but did not take up the chance to make him an interlocutor to push forward the peace process. The document calls for a two-state solution to the Palestine-Israel crisis, with Palestinian state contained within territories occupied by Israel in the Six Day War of 1967.

It stresses however that its struggle is not against Jews due to their religion but against Israel as an occupier. This is an implicit answer to those who claim that Hamas is simply a branch of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood.

"His election is a sign that the Gaza leadership has regained the upper hand from those outside", she said.

Former Prime Minister of the Palestinian national authority Ismail Haniyeh was headed by the radical Islamist movement Hamas.

Speaking at his weekly Cabinet meeting, Netanyahu said President Trump's upcoming visit to Israel reflects the strong bond between the two nations.

To subvert Israel's power and its exercise of the right to self-defense, Hamas will employ diplomatic, legal, and propaganda means, using diplomatic pressures, resolutions of global institutions, sanctions, and rulings of worldwide courts.

Netanyahu not only clearly explains why CNN and the Times were reporting fake news but provides a nice finishing touch by tossing the Hamas report into a trash bucket.

Some say Haniya could challenge the Palestinian Authority's increasingly unpopular leader, Mahmoud Abbas, as the de facto head of the Palestinian people. Major world powers leaned toward Israel and condemned Hamas' firing of rockets on Israeli towns and settlements.

Abu Saada said Haniya's attempts to improve relations with Arab states would be key.

"Hamas could succeed in removing its political wing, not the military arm, from the terror list", he said.

Mkhaimar Abusada, a professor of political science at Gaza's al-Azhar University, said Haniyeh was a natural successor to Mashaal and represented "a continuation for the moderate line in Hamas". (Read for free (right now) over half of this book as an e-book on this website.) It is just one more of many developments that have occurred ever since this book's publication in 1990, now twenty-seven years ago, in which I predict that a Palestinian state will be created in the coastal plain only, with the Gaza Strip as its center.
