Politicos hail SC judgement in Nirbhaya case

LIVE updates | 2012 Nirbhaya gang rape case SC verdict on death penalty to 4 culprits due in hours

"I am sure that in the days to come the Supreme Court will expedite other such cases when it comes to rape and gruesome murder", she said.

Referring to the National Crime Records Bureau data she said a total of 3,27,394 cases of crime against women were reported in the year 2015, which was an increase of over 43 per cent since 2011.

The matter was heard by the apex court bench headed by Justice Dipak Misra and consisting of Justices R. Banumathi and Ashok Bhushan.

The judges said, the aggravating circumstances against Mukesh Singh, Pawan Gupta, Vinay Sharma and Akshay Thakur - all in their 20s - far outweighed the mitigating circumstances, such as their poor family background, age, good conduct in prison and their children cited in their favour. The fifth accused did not receive this award as he is a minor.

Media reports said a round of applause went up in court as the judgement was read out yesterday at the end of an appeal hearing that began past year.

The 429-paged judgment was scathing in its remarks pertaining to the increasing crimes against women in our country.

“What about justice for others whose cases are pending in courts?” Singh asked. They treated her in a devilish manner and played with her identity and dignity.

Jyoti Singh, a physiotherapy student, was raped and left for dead by a gang of five men and a teenager after she boarded a private bus while going home from the cinema with a male friend. The way the convicts had thrown the victims on the road in the cold winter night and had tried to run the bus over her and her friend to remove any trace of the crime also worked against them. The victim succumbed to her injuries in a Singapore hospital on December 29, 2012. Courts are flooded with cases, but the judiciary should track those which may end up in a death sentence and expedite them.

After six months the Delhi High Court on March 13, 2014, upheld the conviction and sentence.

Director Adarsh Eshwarappa, whose film "Shuddhi" was largely inspired by the incident, too agreed with the verdict but expressed disappointment at the time taken to deliver it. However, Badrianth, the victim's father was sure his plea would be answered and the convicts would be hanged. "Terrorists are getting relief from the judiciary".

In the Supreme Court's almost 430-page ruling, its lone female justice urged India to do more to sensitize the public to attacks on women and to make gender equality a priority.

One does not remember how she had reacted when Nirbhaya was raped on the terrible night, but everybody felt the accused should be given instant punishment.
