Officer who fatally shot boy, 15, in Texas is fired

Balch Springs Police Officer Involved in Deadly Shooting Fired

MISDThe Balch Springs, Tex., police officer who shot into a auto full of teenagers, killing Jordan Edwards, a 15-year-old passenger, has been fired, according to NBC News.

The department's account of what happened in the shooting changed after Haber admitted Monday that a vehicle full of teens was driving away from police when an officer armed with a rifle fatally shot the teenager in the head. "I acted on them", Balch Spring police chief Jonathan Haber said on Tuesday evening. Haber said that Oliver's conduct violated departmental policies but would not expand upon which specific policies had been violated.

In a press conference Monday, Haber revealed that after viewing the officer's body cam footage, he discovered the vehicle was actually driving away from the officers as Oliver fired, not toward him as the former officer first stated. "I made a mistake and I apologized for it", Haber said on Tuesday.

"The Edwards family said in a statement it was grateful for the decision to terminate the officer, and anxiously awaits his arrest for murder".

The Dallas County district attorney's public integrity unit, and the Dallas County Sheriff's Department are reviewing the case.It is unclear if there will be criminal charges against Oliver.

Lee Merritt, an attorney for the Edwards family, said that Oliver fired three shots into the vehicle Edwards was in, based on eyewitness accounts from the other passengers in the auto. Sometime after they arrived gunshots were fired and in the resulting commotion Oliver fired at a auto carrying Edwards and his brothers. They also draw comparisons between Edwards' death and other previous police shootings of young Black men.

Harber said he released the mistaken information based on an account given to him by the officer. The family has called for murder charges to be brought against Oliver. The department involved as has fired the officer who pulled the trigger.

"The officers who extended this nightmare for those children ought to be properly reprimanded, as well", the family said.

"Our family is working hard to deal with both the loss of our beloved Jordan and the lingering trauma it has caused our boys", it said.

Edwards' family will hold the teen's funeral on Saturday. The attorney said Jordan's older brother, 16, was detained by police overnight but not given a reason or charged, and was not informed police had killed his brother until being released.

"You have my assurances my department will continue to be responsive, transparent and accountable".

Meanwhile, the Dallas suburb is still reeling over the death of Edwards, 15, a high school freshman who was with his brothers and leaving an event where police were responding to gunshots they heard while investigating a call.
