Nigeria president seeks treatment in London

Buhari was in Britain earlier this year for more than seven weeks for medical care.

Buhari has been under pressure to disclose the nature of his illness but has said he would have to have follow-up treatment in London. But it was the mass kidnapping of 276 girls in April 2014 that horrified the world and brought the extremist group worldwide attention.

He has missed three weekly cabinet meetings and he spent about six weeks in London on medical leave earlier this year, later saying that he had never been as sick in his life. The vice president will be in charge.

He assured Nigerians, especially relatives and friends of the remaining girls that the Federal Government "will spare no effort to see that they and all other Nigerians, who have been abducted, safely regain their freedom".

The President directed security agencies and state governments to continue to provide special protection to educational institutions vulnerable to this kind of outrage especially in remote areas. Amnesty International has recorded 41 cases of mass abductions in the last three years.

Parents of the missing Chibok girls are slowly learning if their daughters are among the 82 freed by Boko Haram militants in Nigeria two days ago.

In this photo released by the Nigeria State House, Nigeria's President, Muhammadu Buhari, left, meets with Chibok school girls recently freed from Nigeria Extremist captivity in Abuja, Nigeria, Sunday, May.

UNICEF's Nigeria Acting Representative, Pernille Ironside in a statement said the girls' release was "heartening", while also calling on Boko Haram to put an end to crime against children. The official spoke on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to speak to reporters on the matter.

Authorities say 113 of the 276 girls abducted from their boarding school back in 2014 remain missing. Others did not want to come home because they'd been radicalized by their captors, the girls said. The group had seized thousands of captives in less than a decade.

"This news is a glimmer of hope that one day all the kidnapped girls will once again return home, live freely and have a peaceful future", the statement said.

"The president was delighted to receive them and he promised that all that is needed to be done to reintegrate them into the society will be done", adviser Femi Adesina said.

On when the girls would reunite with their families, Adesina said those handling that have a programme of action specifying when that would be done. They are expected to meet with President Muhammadu Buhari later Sunday.

A Nigerian government official, who declined to be identified, said the 82 girls had been set at liberty in exchange for five Boko Haram commanders.
