White House says Trump won't immediately pull out of NAFTA

Trump's remarks come as debate swirls around his presidential campaign promise to end the North America Free Trade Agreement or NAFTA in contrast to his recent assertion that he will "negotiate" a revision of the treaty that has guided US trade policy with Mexico and Canada since 1994.

Reports emerged last week that Trump was considering an executive order announcing his intent to do away with NAFTA.

Trump railed against the decades-old trade deal during his campaign, describing it as a "disaster". "And I said I will hold on the termination, let's see if we can make it a fair deal, because NAFTA has been a terrible deal for the United States".

The draft had been created by Peter Navarro, the director both of Trade and Industrial Policy and of the White House National Trade Council, and by key Trump strategist Steve Bannon, Politico reported. "I believe that the end result will make all three countries stronger and better". Yesterday, Trump confirmed that was the case, but added a twist in a pair of early morning tweets.

Late Wednesday night, the White House released a statement backing off of the notion after the president spoke with the leaders of Canada and Mexico.

"While we understand the President's desire to work to secure better trade deals for America, it is imperative that new negotiations do not jeopardize arrangements within NAFTA that benefit Nebraska agriculture". He declared a new deal as "very possible".

Raj Bhala, an expert on worldwide trade law and global trade, is available to speak with media about NAFTA, Trump's rhetoric on the topic, renegotiation of the deal, the original agreement, its effects on the three participating countries and related topics. The US trade deficit in goods and services past year with Mexico was $62 billion, but with Canada the US had a surplus of $8 billion.

U.S. President Donald Trump insists he wasn't bluffing about threatening to pull out of NAFTA this week. We have a very good relationship.

Mexican officials continued to talk to their USA counterparts as the hours passed, and toward the end of the day Pena Nieto called Trump for a conversation that lasted about 20 minutes. However, as we've seen time and time again, Trump voters are still very loyal to their president and continue to support him and make excuses. But he also says he had a change of heart during phone calls with the leaders of Canada and Mexico.

"NAFTA has become a pillar of the American economy and stands as one of the broadest, deepest free-trade agreements in human history". "I can always terminate", Trump said. Trump has walked back those sentiments, but withdrawal will remain on the table depending on how negotiations are handled.

Trudeau said the president seriously raised the possibility.

"We ship a couple thousand cars a year to Japan, while they ship about 159,000 here", he said.

Trump recently ramped up his criticism of Canada and this week ordered 20 percent tariffs on imports of Canadian softwood lumber, setting a tense tone as the three countries prepared to renegotiate the pact.
