Nepal man, 85, dies trying to become oldest Everest climber

He was the grandfather of 17, and the great-grandfather of six, the website reported.

Mountaineering officials, including one at the base camp, said the likely cause of death was cardiac arrest.

Picture taken on March 6, 2017 shows Min Bahadur Sherchan, an 86-year-old former Gurkha greets while expressing his plan to become the oldest person ever to conquer Mt. Qomolangma (Everest) during a press meet organized in Kathmandu, Nepal.

Sherchan said his objective for making the climb again wasn't exclusively to break Miura's record, however.

According to his expedition handler, Sherchan had not suffered any kind of problem throughout his journey to the 5,380 metres base camp.

Eighty-five-year-old mountaineer Min Bahadur Sherchan, who previously held the title for world's oldest climber to top Mount Everest, died Saturday while attempting to reclaim the record, the Associated Press reports.

In May 2008 the then 76-year-old Sherchan became the oldest person to reach Everest's summit.

The bad weather slowed the work, but the first attempt could occur as soon as Sunday, said government mountaineering official Gyanendra Shrestha, who is stationed at Everest's base camp.

He was born in the mountains so never had a problem with altitude or low levels of oxygen.

Before leaving for the mountain last month, Mr Sherchan said that once he had completed the climb and become famous, he meant to travel to areas of conflict to spread a message of peace.

Steck, 40, was in the area acclimatizing ahead of a bid to climb Everest through the less-climbed West Ridge route and traverse to Lhotse, the world's fourth highest peak at 27,940 feet this month.
