Joey Logano Penske penalized following victory at Richmond

Joey Logano thought his win in last Sunday's Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race at Richmond International Raceway put him in the playoffs, setting him up for a run at his first championship.

"The fact of the matter is we're winning right now, and when your vehicle wins, it gets put through tech a lot". It wasn't a big thing, but the rule is written black-and-white. You have to find that edge and get right to it.

This was a violation of Section 20 of the NASCAR rules.

However, his auto failed post-race technical checks at NASCAR's R&D facility, therefore the win has been declared "encumbered". The differences are that NASCAR still declares the winning driver the victor (the sanctioning body has always been loathe to name anyone a race victor who didn't take the checkered flag) and that vacated victories in other sports usually take place down the road, not within the season now being contested.

Brad Keselowski, Logano's teammate, was penalized after his No. 2 auto failed postrace inspection following a fifth-place finish March 19 race at Phoenix International Raceway. Engineer Miles Stanley will direct the team this weekend while Penske's Xfinity crew chief Greg Erwin, a former Cup crew chief, will make the pit and adjustment calls during the race Sunday.

So while the issue is more or less closed, Logano will keep the win, technically, but he will have to win again to receive an automatic playoff berth. If you go a little bit over, we're sitting with what we're talking about today.

Team Penske has accepted responsibility for the violation and will not appeal.

Also, the 25-point penalty dropped Logano from fourth to fifth in the standings.

"It was legal when it rolled across the NASCAR inspection platform to start with (before the race), and I would say just race loads and everything else, it became low enough in load that the back of the pinion gap opened up a 32nd of an inch". We've lost our crew chief for a couple of weeks.

In another penalty issued Thursday, Denny Hamlin's auto, the No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing entry, was missing a lug nut during postrace inspection at Richmond.

"As a race vehicle driver am I in tune to of what's going on?" "It has nothing to do with swerving".
