Thai news organizations urge government to scrap media control bill

Journalists mark World Press Freedom Day

Countries that witnessed the largest decline in press freedom are Poland, Turkey, Burundi, Hungary, Bolivia, Serbia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

"The bill is essentially created to facilitate political interference in the media and restrict press freedom", the Thai media organizations said in a joint statement.

In Hyderabad, senior journalists, addressing a seminar organised by PFUJ, said governments never favoured an independent media, adding that rulers were conspiring to impose curbs on media houses only to hide their incompetency. Because the circumstances that breed impunity remain, the drop in journalist killings a year ago could be a mere pause in what has become a habit of permanently silencing critical reporting and commentary. Free media and an independent, effective judiciary play a mutually reinforcing role as pillars of democracy.

Since 2002 Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has published the World Press Freedom Index, a snapshot of the media freedom situation based on an evaluation of pluralism, independence of the media, quality of legislative framework and safety of journalists in 180 countries including South Africa.

However, journalists unions in more than a dozen countries have led protests, industrial action, campaigns, legal challenges and other actions from strikes to protests to defend media freedom and the labour rights of journalists. "Attacks on the media usually go hand-in-hand with attacks on civil society, and are a barometer of the levels of injustice, corruption and authoritarianism in any society", warns Mandeep Tiwana, Head of Policy and Research at CIVICUS.

May 3 is celebrated as World Press Freedom Day every year.

The chairman of CNC calls upon the security forces to be more flexible and understand that journalists are entitled to perform safely their daily activities in Burundi and thus protect them and their equipment. Even a pause in media killings is welcome news in one of the most unsafe countries for journalists.

The government must act to secure press freedom by repealing draconian press laws that are inimical press freedom and end the public demonization of critical journalists.

The IFJ listed 93 cases of killings of journalists around the world a year ago and in 2017, 13 have lost their lives to violence so far.
