United Settled with the Guy Dragged Off Its Plane

United issued its own brief statement Thursday, noting that it had reached an amicable settlement with Dao.

David Dao's legal team announced the settlement in a brief statement on Thursday, saying the agreement includes a provision that the amount will remain confidential.

According to the investigation, United Flight 3411 traveling from Chicago to Louisville on April 9 had resolved one overbooking issue before boarding the plane to its capacity of 70 passengers. Soon after, United's CEO Munoz stated, "I apologize for having to re-accommodate these customers".

"Going forward, he hopes United takes the lead in inspiring the entire airline industry to supply passengers the dignity, respect and fairness we all deserve", Demetrio said.

United Airlines avoided a lawsuit by settling out of court with a passenger whose forcible removal from a plane was captured on video and circulated online by fellow travelers, sparking widespread condemnation of the carrier.

Dr. David Dao will receive an undisclosed amount from the company it was announced on Thursday afternoon.

While the incident set off a seemingly never-ending PR nightmare for the airline, Dao's attorney Thomas Demetrio praised United and its CEO Oscar Munoz. The lawyer said the airline should be applauded for accepting corporate accountability in the matter.

Dao was dragged down the aisle by Chicago aviation officers, who were called by airline staff.

After passengers boarded, four crew members of Republic Airline - which operates many United Express flights - arrived late after their plane to Louisville was delayed by a mechanical problem. The police officers involved have also since been suspended.

United said that the offer was part of the carrier's efforts to fix the damage from Dao's rough removal.

The airline also said it would create a new check-in process that would allow passengers to volunteer to give up their seats for compensation, and increased the limit of that compensation to $10,000 from $1,350.

There have been calls for United Airlines officials to testify in Congress about the confrontation, and the Senate Commerce Committee has been in touch with Munoz, seeking more details.

The agency released a report Monday in which the officer who pulled Dao from his seat, James Long, gave his version of events. Long said Dao was verbally and physically abusive and was flailing his arms before he lost his balance and struck his mouth on an armrest.
