Trump to meet Australian PM on 1st presidential trip to NYC

About 1,000 city cops are assigned to President Donald Trump's first homecoming since the native New Yorker's inauguration January 20, according to an NYPD official who spoke on condition of anonymity.

It will likely be a fiery homecoming for the president on Thursday (Friday AEST), who has not been in NY since January 19, the day before his inauguration.

Fewer than one in five residents in America's most populous city voted for Trump, even though he comes from the city's Queens borough, built a brand in real estate and other ventures associated with NY, and has been tabloid fodder for decades.

"Donald Trump will returning to his hometown as the least popular president in recent history after 100 days, leading an administration that has shown itself to be bigoted, greedy and ineffective", the Working Families Party said in a recent statement. VOA reporter Tina Trinh has more.

Hundreds of NYPD officers have been deployed to secure his appearance, with many more on standby on surrounding blocks.

The president is not expected to spend the night at Trump Tower, but he could drop in before he heads to his private golf club an hour away in Bedminister, New Jersey.

Manhattan was the imposing backdrop as Trump transformed himself from local real-estate developer to celebrity businessman — skyscrapers and gossip pages featured his name — and during last year's presidential campaign he'd fly thousands of miles to sleep in his own bed at Trump Tower.

Yet the president isn't returning for long.

"I have no doubt that the prime minister and President Trump will find a lot in common, I'm sure they'll get along well", she said, without elaborating on what talks would focus on. The two plan to stay in the city until Barron finishes the school year.

The Republican president received only 18 percent of the vote in the decidedly liberal city but his allies say New Yorkers should still salute the historic nature of his visit.

Without New York, we wouldn't have had the same Donald Trump.

"I had hoped the divisive rhetoric would end".

Trump has also caused a financial headache for the city.

For months de Blasio has pleaded with Trump to ask Congress to reimburse the city for more than $24 million in costs incurred guarding Trump Tower.

"It was a new administration, briefings were coming from across the administration and there was a moment when the president expressed less than admiration for an agreement that the previous administration has entered into".

"This city is the bluest of the blue". He and his friends, without their parents' approval, would ride the subway into Manhattan and marvel at the circus-like atmosphere that seemed to teem from Times Square and other areas in NY, friends say.
