FBI chief says he had to tell Congress of Clinton email news

Comey Anthony Weiner Received Classified Clinton Emails by Kristina Wong3 May 20170 3 May 2017 3 May 2017

FBI Director James Comey beat back questions about the continuing federal probe into Russian interference in the USA elections, as senators tried to pry any bit of information out of him Wednesday.

In that time, Comey touched on a variety of subtopics and revealed a lot of his thinking that had gone on behind the scenes.

Comey said he made a decision to go public with his findings from the Hillary Clinton email investigation following former President Bill Clinton met privately with Attorney General Loretta Lynch.

But Comey, again, said he would not answer one way or another.

"And then the capper was - and I'm not picking on the attorney general, Loretta Lynch, who I like very much - but her meeting with President Clinton on that airplane was the capper for me, and I then said, you know what, the department can not, by itself, credibly end this", he added. "That was our burden and we were unable to meet it", he said.

He mentioned the press conference and his subsequent testimony under oath that the investigation was complete as reasons he had to go public when he knew that emails possibly relevant to the investigation were found on former New York Rep. Anthony Weiner's computer.

That discovery set the ball rolling on a series of events that many Democrats argue - including Hillary Clinton - cost the election.

WikiLeaks' Australian founder Julian Assange tweeted in response that Comey misled the Senate when he said WikiLeaks doesn't inform the Federal Bureau of Investigation it is about to publish sensitive information.

"It's somewhat sad that we're still debating why the president won in the fashion that he did", Spicer said.

Comey replied: "There's no Anthony Weiner statute".

"Is it fair to say that the Russian government is still involved in American politics?"

The FBI began a counterintelligence investigation last July into whether Russian Federation had coordinated with Trump campaign associates to influence the American election, but he did not disclose that until a hearing in March, after Trump had been elected and taken office.

"Fine. Better than interfering in foreign affairs", Clinton said.

Wikileaks boss Julian Assange. He likened the site to "intelligence porn" and said it pushed out information to damage the United States.

The FBI director acknowledged recent months have been hard.

Democrats have charged that Comey's decision to reopen the probe may have been politically motivated and helped swing the election in Donald Trump's favor.

Since the Justice Department traditionally does not confirm the existence of an investigation, it's ordinarily equally reluctant to announce when one concludes without charges.

In an appearance before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday, Comey said it made him "nauseous" to think that his announcement on October 28 may have affected the election's outcome.

"Look, this was bad".

He said: "It makes me mildly nauseous to think we might have had an impact on the election but honestly it wouldn't change the decision". A man who says he doesn't want him or his agency to generate headlines in fact generated plenty of them when, in March, he confirmed to a House Intelligence Committee hearing that the FBI is investigating connections between the Russian government and Trump's campaign. Trump said in a couple of tweets.

Comey brushed it off Wednesday, saying he didn't give Clinton a free pass.

A spokesman for President Bill Clinton did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
