The U.S. Geological Service reports a 6.2-magnitude quake that hit 88 kilometres northwest of Skagway, Alaska, early Monday morning. At a magnitude of 6.2, the temblor hit northwest of Mosquito Lake, a hamlet with a population of about 300.

There have been 38 earthquakes that measured higher than six magnitudes since 1985-the year Earthquakes Canada started collecting information. Fortunately there were no reports of injuries or damage.

An quake has struck in the northern tip of British Columbia, near the border with Alaska and Yukon.

"I was in bed and woken up by violent shaking". According to the University of Alaska Fairbanks' Alaska Earthquake Center, it had a magnitude of 6.2.

The aftershocks won't travel as wide an area as the earthquakes that triggered them, but she said Southeast communities could still feel them.

The location in the unpopulated area off the Haines Highway helped limit the damage caused by the quakes.

"I know it was felt quite strongly in Whitehorse, and there was a lot of shaking that went on for probably about thirty seconds".

The geological survey website has recorded almost 200 reports of people feeling the shaking.

The earthquakes, though large in size, were not directly near any structures, and no tsunami warning has been issued.
