Hot Switch sales boost Nintendo sales, trim quarterly loss

Nintendo Switch is off to a strong start, with more than 2.74m consoles shipped during its first month of release. That sustained demand is a good sign for the Switch, and likely partly responsible for its expectation that it'll sell around 10 million during its next full fiscal year, which ends in April 2018.

For the 12-month period beginning this month, Nintendo expects to see operating profit of Yen65 billion yen ($585 million) on revenue of Yen750 billion, the company said. 3DS hardware sales, bolstered in regions outside of Japan by the launch of Pokemon GO, were up 7% year-over-year to hit 7.27 million units, while software sales climbed an impressive 14% to hit 55.08 million units.

By selling 2.74 million units across the globe, the Nintendo Switch's first-month performance has overshot Nintendo's original sales projection by 740,000 units, or 37%. The company called that "a promising start", adding that Zelda sold 2.76 million units. Despite several games releasing with heavy amiibo compatibility, sales were limited to 9.1 million figures and 9.3 million cards for the entire fiscal year. Time reports Nintendo sold 2.74 million Switches in March after launching March 3.

Mr. Kimishima said Nintendo would be spending more this year on promotion to sell the Switch, putting a drag on operating profit.

It's not all bad news, though, and others have experienced fewer or no problems with the Switch eShop curation and process.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild became a tentpole release for Nintendo's newest console, the Switch, offering players the chance to explore and interact with its world like never before.

Making video game consoles has always been a losing venture, but one that made up for hardware manufacturing losses on. "If our analysis is correct, software profit contributions should exceed the profit effects of increased hardware shipments, which we think is insufficiently priced into the stock".

By launching earlier in the year, though, Nintendo could be positioning itself for even stronger holiday sales. The company's last console update failed to do the business, so Nintendo needed the Switch to succeed in a big way. With this, Nintendo has pledged to try to "maintain the momentum of the platform and to reach a broader audience".

The Japanese firm entered the mobile gaming market a year ago to the relief of shareholders fretting about diving console sales. It's natural that the company wants to give its new system a solid foundation, but being restrictive is not the way to go about that. It's a massively popular series for Nintendo, and this remake of the 2014 Wii U game has earned lots of praise for its many improvements.
