Senate confirms 31st Secretary of Agriculture: Sonny Perdue

President Donald Trump's proposed budget would slash spending on agriculture research and other rural development. Governor Perdue will serve our nation's farmers and ranchers well.

Nebraska lawmakers in Washington, D.C. are sharing their support for Perdue's confirmation. "As Governor of Georgia, Sonny Perdue was a great friend to the fresh fruit and vegetable industry and we look forward to working with him once again to ensure all Americans have access to healthy, nutritious foods".

Sonny Perdue, with his wife Mary Perdue, takes the oath of office administered by Associate Justice Clarence Thomas in the U.S. Supreme Court Building, becoming the 31st U.S. Secretary of Agriculture.

Those who did speak said Perdue's background as a veterinarian and agri-businessman would make him a strong advocate for rural America at the Agriculture Department, or USDA.

"The USDA needs a champion who will support small family farmers, food safety standards and healthier food - not another shill for big agribusiness", Finck-Haynes said.

Trump will sign the executive order after a meeting with 15 farmers from across the country, including Zippy Duvall, the president of the American Farm Bureau; Bill Northey, the Iowa Secretary of Agriculture; and Lisa Johnson Billy, a farmer and former Oklahoma House member, CNN reported on Monday.

Many farmers are relying on Perdue to revive their businesses as they are suffering a downturn in the market.

Others at the roundtable included Iowa Secretary of Agriculture and farmer Bill Northey, NC Commissioner of Agriculture and farmer Steve Troxler and former California Secretary of Agriculture and farmer A.G. Kawamura.

A statement from the National Turkey Federation (NTF) said the following: "Perdue understands that agriculture is the foundation of our nation and that, given a strong economic environment; America has an unmatched capacity to help feed a hungry world".

"The list of issues facing our industry is long, but we stand ready to work with Secretary Perdue and his staff to ensure USA cattle producers are provided a fair and competitive marketplace", says the United States Cattlemen's Association.

"I stand as a willing partner to work with Secretary Perdue and President Trump to address this urgent issue", Baldwin said. Debbie Stabenow of MI, the top Democrat on the Senate Agriculture Committee. Trump has nominated Florida International University College of Law dean Alexander Acosta, with Republicans planning to put him up to a confirmation vote as soon as this week.
