With First Round Over, French Presidential Candidates Look Ahead To Parliamentary Elections

"I haven't found the first 48 hours of the democratic candidate to be up to the job of fending off her attacks", Mr Cambadelis said.

Gentiloni held a telephone conversation on Monday with Macron following his win in first round of the election, and both sides agreed to jointly work toward European prosperity, Sputnik reports quoting the Italian government press service.

The National Front leader had advanced to the second round of France's presidential election along with centrist Emmanuel Macron.

Hollande, a Socialist nearing the end of five years of unpopular rule, threw his weight behind his former economy minister in a televised address, saying Le Pen's policies were divisive and stigmatized sections of the population.

Voters aged 18-24 came out in large numbers to support far-left candidate Jean-Luc Mélenchon (who won around 30% of the youth vote).

The first round of the French presidential elections on Sunday has been considered a rejection of the mainstream parties, and a surprising victory for the two political "outsiders" who will move onto a second round in May: the centrist Emmanuel Macron of En Marche! Very few voters who backed Mélenchon and conservative François Fillon, the other candidate Le Pen needs to pull voters from, have said they would back Le Pen over Macron in the second round. "I will be above partisan considerations", she said.

The voter turnout is expected to drop significantly from the first round, as many people will boycott the election in protest of the available alternatives.

Antonio Tajani, president of the European Parliament, told French people to get involved and defend the European Union, from Ms Le Pen's anti-EU stance.

"This evening, I am no longer the president of the National Front".

She has campaigned on pledges to slash immigration, fight the threat of Islamic extremism and renegotiate France's relationship with the EU.

Le Pen started her day at the Rungis wholesale market outside Paris, calling for more food to be produced and consumed in this country known as the gastronomic center of the Western world.

Mr Macron's internal security program calls for 10,000 more police officers and 15,000 new prison places, and he has recruited a number of security experts to his entourage.
