5 killed in blast in Pak's tribal belt

Pakistani mourners offer funeral prayers for the victims of a roadside bomb blast in Parachinar

At least nine people were killed, including women and children, and 13 others injured when a passenger vehicle struck a roadside bomb in Pakistan's northwest tribal region bordering Afghanistan today, officials said. Thirteen people were also injured in the explosion.

A bomb went off near a passenger van in Gudar area of Central Kurram Agency on early Tuesday morning.

Jamaatur Ahrar, a faction of the PakistanTaliban, has claimed responsibility for the attack, saying the explosive device had been meant to target the Shia minority and workers in the area carrying out a population census.

The injured have been shifted to Civil Hospital Sadda.

According to a statement by Intra Services Public relations, a special helicopter was deployed for relief operation.

Five women and four children are among the victims.

Prime minister Nawaz Sharif and interior minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan condemned the tragic blast and instructed authorities to provide best medical facilities to the injured. It said through its spokesman that the attack targeted census workers and also Shias travelling in the van.

Sectarian tensions between Sunni majority and the Shia minority have particularly flared in the recent past in Parachinar and the surrounding areas.

Last month, more than 20 people were killed and over 50 wounded when a bomb tore through a market in the mainly Shia area, in an attack claimed by the Taliban.

The attacks, most of which were claimed by the Islamic State group or the Pakistani Taliban, included a suicide bomb in Lahore which killed 14 people and was also claimed by JuA.
