Welsh electoral 'earthquake' of Tory gains suggested by poll

Mr Hammond says he believes Paul Ryan supports a UK-US free trade deal

Plaid Cymru are unchanged on 13%, but UKIP's vote has collapsed from 13% to 6% since January.

More than 1,000 pollsters were interviewed and yet only 30 per cent indicated their intention to vote Labour, a decrease of three per cent since the start of 2017.

Their surprise 10-point lead points to Labour MPs" worst fears that the "Corbyn effect' is combining with May's growing popularity to radically slash the party's support.

Today the poll of Westminster voting intention, carried out by YouGov poll for Cardiff University and ITV, forecast 21 seats for the Tories, 15 for Labour, three for Plaid and one for the Liberal Democrats.

They have won a majority of Welsh seats at every general election since 1935 on and the most votes at every election from 1922 on.

The ten seats that the Tories are projected to pick up from Labour are: Ynys Mon, Alyn and Deeside, Bridgend, Cardiff South and Penarth, Cardiff West, Clwyd South, Delyn, Newport East, Newport West and Wrexham.

A leading professor in political science has said the election in June could result in an "unprecedented" result in Wales after a poll shows the Tories have edged ahead of Labour.

Over the weekend it emerged that Labour has plunged to historic lows in Scotland, with the Conservatives up by as much as 18 points from the 2015 election. The seven-point fall in UKIP vote is in line with YouGov's wider national figures.

"We need a general election and we need one now".

Mrs May is also expected to warn Welsh voters that a Labour commitment to borrow £500 billion to fund a grand spending spree after Carwyn Jones, the Welsh Labour leader and First Minister of Wales, justified it by saying "there's never been a better time to borrow".

The Labour leader defeated Welsh MP Owen Smith in his second party leadership landslide in 2016, attracting big crowds of supporters for his campaign.
