India plans to tag millions of cows to curb smuggling

The report, which was submitted before a bench comprising Chief Justice of India JS Khehar and Justice DY Chandrachud, was prepared by a committee headed by the joint secretary of the home ministry.

The Centre's report on the issue states that the "Responsibility to safety and care of abandoned animals is mainly of the State government". The other important recommendation says that every district must have shelter home provision for abandoned animals with a minimum capacity of 500.

The government will also reportedly set up helpline numbers that would help people track cows and will also allow people to report any cow trafficking activities.

Another recommendation by the Centre said each cow and its progeny across India should get a Unique Identification Number so that their tracking can be done. It is largely observed that soon after the milk productivity of the cattle ends, they are sold out or smuggled.

A series of cow vigilante attacks have stirred protests and anger in recent weeks in states like Rajasthan, Jammu and Kashmir, Delhi and Jharkhand. "The existing shelter homes lack facility and human resources", it stated.

Further, reports claim that almost one lakh technicians have been armed with 50,000 tablets. "It may be made mandatory for cows and their progeny throughout India".

Increased cattle smuggling and cow protection concern have propelled government to look into the matter and propose a Unique Identification Numbering for the cows across the country.

The tamper-proof tag just weighs eight grams so that it doesn't cause any inconvenience to the animal and its cost is Rs 8 per piece.

"The Union Agriculture Ministry has devised a tamper-proof identification of cattle using polyurethane tags with UIN". One lakh technicians, armed with 50,0000 tablets are on a mission of fixing polyurethane tags with tag applicators on the ears of cattle.
